Tonight, the ball will drop on Times Square for the 100th time to usher in the New Year. As it does so, readings could be hovering close to 50°. The New Year should prove very warm with the mercury rising toward or perhaps even above 60°.
While snow geese swelter in the unseasonable blast of balmy air, the warmth should not necessarily melt their hopes for a season with decent snowfall.
On 22 prior occasions, NYC saw a high temperature of 50° or above. 7/22 (32%) seasons saw 30” or more snowfall; 8/22 (36%) seasons saw less than 20” snowfall. Average seasonal snowfall for those seasons came to 27.6”.
However, for the 12 seasons that had seen 3” or more snow in December--the figure for 2004--the average seasonal snowfall climbed to 34.1”. 6 of those 12 (50%) seasons received 30” or more. Just 2 of those 12 seasons (17%) received less than 20”:
