Strong Canadian front now through the area with gusty north winds in
its wake. Cold air advection will continue today and into Tuesday with
winds at or above 30mph. Highs have already been reached and temps.
will remain nearly steady even with full sun.

Winds remain up tonight and save most of the area from a hard freeze.
We will not be so lucky tomorrow night as calm winds and clear skies
lead to excellent radiational cooling. All but the immediate coast
will see a freeze with areas along and north of a Waller to Spring to
Liberty line seeing a hard freeze. North of this line temps. will be
below freezing for 7-10 hours and lows may bottom out in the low 20's.
The rest of the area will see lows in the upper 20's and low 30's for
about 3-5 hours. Significant vegetation damage is likely with these
temps.

Extended:

Clouds return Thursday and prevent another freeze. Temps. warm into
next weekend.

Christmas Week:

Bitter cold will be building over Canada by this weekend with a highly
amplified pattern developing over the lower 48. Massive ridging in the
west extending beyond the north pole into N Russia and an impressive
trough over the E US extending all the way into the Caribbean Sea will
unlock the arctic flood gates. Very cold arctic air will reach
southern Canada by Sunday and blast south into the central plains by
Monday and arrive in TX Tuesday.

Very interesting weather is shaping up for the 21st through the 23rd
as the cold air is in place and is then overrun by the sub-tropical
jet. The GFS thinks the air column will be cold even for all frozen
precip. and is forecasting 2-3 inches of snow for Dallas and .5 of an
inch for Houston on the 23rd. If the arctic punch is strong enough,
then snow will be possible, however I like an ice event better right
now with widespread freezing rain and sleet over a large part of TX
the week of Christmas. If for some reason the clouds do not develop,
then extremely cold overnights will be possible (ie teens)

I hope this happens! .5 of snow around Christmas would be fantastic! Please keep us updated, Jeff. Thanks.
