Search Called Off for Missing Utah Woman

42 minutes ago Add U.S. National - AP to My Yahoo!

By PAUL FOY, Associated Press Writer

SALT LAKE CITY - Authorities investigating the case of a missing woman were surprised by her relatives' announcement that new information from her husband had prompted them to tell volunteers to stop searching for her. The statement released late Saturday by the families of Mark and Lori Hacking did not say what Mark Hacking had told them.
Police were planning a news conference Sunday. Investigators said they had not heard from the Hackings' relatives and were trying to reach them.
"If they've got information that's breaking, that's something we need to hear about." Detective Phil Eslinger told The Associated Press.
Eslinger said detectives were trying to arrange a meeting with Mark Hacking's parents, Douglas and Janet Hacking, who refused to comment when contacted by The Associated Press early Sunday.
Lori Hacking, 27, has been missing since July 19, when Mark Hacking told authorities that she failed to return from an early morning jog.
Lori Hacking's father, Eraldo Soares, said late Saturday that he was unaware of any new information about his daughter.
The organized search for Lori Hacking was called off by the families earlier this week, a decision they said was made out of concern for the volunteers' safety. The search was in neighborhoods, industrial areas and canyons near the park where Lori Hacking was said to have been jogging the morning she was reported missing.
Since that day, Mark Hacking's credibility has crumbled amid revelations that he lied to his wife about enrolling at medical school in North Carolina and about graduating from the University of Utah.
The day after Mark Hacking reported his wife missing, he was taken to a psychiatric ward after he was seen running around at night naked in sandals outside a motel where he'd taken a room.
Investigators focused on Hacking, 28, after learning he was at a store buying a new mattress just before reporting his wife missing. Authorities were later seen removing a box spring from the couple's apartment. Investigators have refused to confirm reports that they found a mattress in a nearby trash bin.
Hacking has not been charged.

What we do know:
1. Killed with a hunting knife.
2. Mark went to TWO separate stores to buy a mattress. The first one couldn't be delivered that day so he went to a different one. THEN he called the police.
3. They have found the mattress with the top portion removed, leading them to believe that she is wrapped in the mattress top along with the sheets and comforter.
4. They know what color the sheets and comforter are.
5. The mattress and she were put in two separate dumpsters.

What we don't know:
1. If they have actually found here, where she is.
2. Whether they have recovered the body.
3. Six million other details.

All of this makes me want to get out the fire ants and make a little trip to see POOR Mark Hacking, the a$$.

Not only is this sick but sad as well! How do you cope with finding out that the person that you have been standing beside and sticking up for has murdered your child? What's wrong with our world?

He is in custody at the jail now. No body found yet, her poor family. They DO believe they will find her, the search resumes Wednesday.

Prayers for her family and friends. Such a tragic waste of life, and such a complete waste of DNA (her husband). :(

i sure hope they find her soon so they can pin it on that creep, and the family can find peace. i just dont that i could handle something like this. my kids r my life and to have one taken away, well they had better put him someplace that i couldnt get in. i have always told my kids when they marry that its your place to deal with ur husband, but if they ever miss treat you then they will have to deal with me and that wont be pretty.

Scott petersen did the same thing to his wife. And think about the fetus that was also found. This is sick too. I know scott claims to be innocent. But I have a suspicion that he actually killed his wife. He went fishing the day of her disappearance off the calfornia bay along where his wife & her baby's fetus was found washed ashore. He change his story to his relatives saying he was going golfing but instead went fishing. If I'm not mistaken didn't the cleaning lady find scott cleaning the kitchen with bleach the day of lacy's disappearence. I knew from day one when he was sitting at a table passing out fliers of his wifes disappearance, he didn't look sad or upset about her being missing from their home. If it was me I would be so upset that it would be hard for me to keep my composer. If my husband isn't home at a certain time I'll be ringing his cell phone. Its not like I don't trust him its because I know he is usually home at a certain time. If he takes long trips I constantly call him every 1hr. I think its sad that you can't even trust the one's your married too. Now getting back to the story I knew that lady's husband had something to do with the disappearance of his wife. Why buy a new mattress the same day of her disappeance. He should've been out looking for his wife. But anyway life must go on.

Video of Mark Hacking taken at a convenience store at 1:30 AM the day he reported her missing. Police believe this surveillance video is AFTER he killed her, note him checking his hands.

Mark hacking lied from day one saying to his wife that he graduated from clollege in utah and was going to attend some medical school in NC. Its sad to marry someone that has a hidden secret. Looking for someone nowadays is almost impossible. People are just plain sick when they do acts of this nature not mentioning other acts of violence. I hope the family can cope after all this.I think they suffer the most.
