I thought we could get a discussion going on some of the items you consider important for preparing for an approaching hurricane?
One for me is a generator - I live out in the boonies and this would be the only way I would probably have electricity for days. Also, my basic survival kit with flashlights, batteries and food supplies.
What items do you consider to be most important?

Run like h***. No how about water, do you all still clean the bath tub to put water in , we use to do that and fill them all up with water. can foods, lanterns, candles, first aid Kit, shutters if you dont have them, or tape to tape windows. When i was young we would prepare for days, which was a royal pain. radio with batteries. also know where to turn off the gas. also know your evacuation path to get out. good thread ticka. we use to also keep a bag of toys for my younger brother to keep him busy just in case.

StinRay I have never had a ice cream valium, like to try one of those. lol
Here's what I will be putting together:
candles, batteries, flashlights, lantern, b-b grill, plenty of charcoal for the b-b-q, canned food, can opener, matches and a lighter, insurance policy in a sealed baggie, dog food, cat food, peanut butter, bread, water, soda, bottle of vodka, cigarettes, change of clothes.....anything I'm forgetting?

As soon as I finish updating the database I will put out a list of prep items for the storm. Give me about 2 hours and it should be up.

Amy - a day or two before the storm - turn your refrigerator to the coldest setting(in case you loose power). Also - you will need Ice in a Ice chest. Another thing is to (of course have a clean bathtub) - fill it up in case you need water. You will also want to go fill up your car (gas) as it may take a while to get gas again. Radio, and get some money(cash) as the ATM's or banks may take a while to open after the storm, any medicines - you may need to have them refilled. Thats all I can think of at the moment.

Thanks Jim. My two bathtubs were scrubbed clean today and are ready to be filled if needed. I have an ice maker in my freezer and it's working overtime until the container is filled to the top. I'll buy a bag of ice in a few days. I filled up the car this evening and will again in a few days. I'll get some cash tomorrow. Medicines are all okay for a month. However, I have an old Rx for valium which I am thinking about refilling. I'll turn up the settings on the frig in a few days. I'll stop at the grocery tomorrow on the way home from work and pick-up anything else I don't have. I'm ready. Let's pray it heads north and all we'll get is rain. Thanks for the pic.
