Now, I heard on the news last winter that precipitation will not freeze if the air temperature is 32 degrees (forgive me if this is a metric site -- 0 degrees), but it actually has to be a couple of degrees below freezing (I suppose that's the PC way to put it :tongue: )

I'm assuming this is because the heat in the water needs to move toward a colder medium in order for the temperature of the water to fall below freezing.

So what factors determine the actual temperature at which, say, freezing rain, or at which rain turns to sleet?

(i.e., when I check out the weather this winter, I want to know if I can determine whether or not we'll get snow, sleet, or freezing rain by looking at the stats instead of just waiting to see)
