James, what is the question most asked when they find out you are a forecaster fot the NHC

"So, what kind of season are we going to have this year?", which is one of my least favorite questions to answer!

Yes I can imagine how many folks ask you that question.

James, I think that was one of the questions I asked, when I took the tour of the NHC. So I am guilty of that question.

Well, that's OK. I am thoroughly used to it! It does seem to be what everyone wants to know. The problem for me is, one's chances of getting hit by a hurricane in any given year are so very small, and are a function of things that absolutely cannot be forecast more than a couple days in advance. So I continue to be amazed that the subject generates so much interest. It is of interest to me mainly because the overall level of activity dictates how many lousy midnight shifts I am going to have to work!

I have taken phone calls from people who think that if we are expecting a quiet year, then they don't have to take precautions. This kind of thinking is what really worries me.
