Last Update: 8/17/2004 2:09:51 PM

United Press International A plane crash during the filming of a movie over the Dry Tortugas has taken the life of cinematographer Neal Fredericks, The Miami Herald reported Tuesday.

Fredericks was best known as the cinematographer of the Blair Witch Project, a low-budget but successful horror film.

Fredericks, 35, of Los Angeles, was aboard a single-engine Cessna that crashed about 79 miles west of Key West Saturday.

The Coast Guard said the pilot and three other members of the camera crew were rescued.

U.S. Army divers recovered Fredericks' body from the plane Sunday.

Fredericks has worked on more than two dozen films during his career.

The Blair Witch Project, shot with hand-held cameras and no artificial lighting, grossed $240 million worldwide.

"He was an immensely, talented, low-key, unassuming, kind and gentle person," said his agent, Charles Lenhoff.

Alice Cooper's Snake Has Emergency Surgery
Last Update: 8/9/2004 2:26:56 PM

United Press International

An 8-foot albino python used on stage by U.S. shock rock legend Alice Cooper had emergency surgery to remove a heating pad and cord, it was reported.

Dr. Richard Jacobs of Higganum, Conn., operated on Alice, the snake, for more than two hours to remove the heating pad and wiring from her stomach, the Hartford (Conn.) Courant said.

Alice was taken to the veterinarian after handlers noticed a large bulge in her body; X-rays revealed the obstruction.

It was absolutely an emergency. She's a very lucky snake, said Alison Sloan, who said the wires could have ruptured Alice's intestines.

Sloan, who owns Ashleigh's Rain Forest in Essex, Conn., helps at-risk snakes.

Cooper, who was in the area to perform at Oakdale Theater in Wallingford, Conn., paid the $1,000 vet bill and has sent Alice to semi-retire at Sloan's rainforest.

Sloan lent Cooper a yellow anaconda for the Oakdale performance.
